Hollywood star George Clooney brought politics into the spotlight on the opening day of the Venice Film Festival after being asked about the current political situation in the United States.
Clooney, a longtime critic of U.S. President Donald Trump, responded with a smile and used the unusual term “kakistocracy” to describe what he believes may be happening in the country.
The word refers to a system of government in which a country is ruled by the least qualified or most incompetent people.
“I think maybe we’re going through something like that right now,” Clooney said. However, he remained optimistic that the United States would eventually move beyond the current situation.
The actor also pointed to the upcoming November election as a potential source of political balance, saying it could provide an important system of checks and balances. He suggested that by 2028, the country might begin returning to a more normal political environment.
Clooney’s criticism of Donald Trump is not new. The Oscar-winning actor and filmmaker has repeatedly voiced opposition to Trump’s political views and policies over the years. His latest remarks once again highlight the strong political divide within Hollywood and the willingness of prominent entertainment figures to speak publicly about U.S. politics.
The opening day of the Venice Film Festival was not entirely focused on politics, however. The prestigious festival also drew major attention for its films, international stars, filmmakers and red-carpet appearances.
As one of the world’s most important film festivals, Venice traditionally attracts some of the biggest names in global cinema. This year’s opening was no different, with celebrities and filmmakers gathering for a packed schedule of premieres and events.
Still, Clooney’s comments quickly became one of the major talking points of the festival’s opening day, bringing renewed attention to the relationship between Hollywood and American politics.
