Lionel Messi to Receive Spain’s Princess of Asturias Award
Argentine football superstar Lionel Messi is set to receive Spain’s prestigious Princess of Asturias Award for Sports 2026 in recognition of his extraordinary career and long-standing charitable work. The eight-time Ballon d’Or winner was announced as this year’s laureate on June 3.
The award ceremony will take place on October 23 at the historic Teatro Campoamor in Oviedo, Spain. King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia will preside over the ceremony, where Messi will be among the distinguished recipients honoured by the Spanish royal family.
Established in 1981, the Princess of Asturias Awards recognise outstanding international contributions across eight categories, including sports, science, literature, the arts, social sciences and international cooperation. Each laureate receives a sculpture designed by renowned Spanish artist Joan Miró, a diploma, an insignia and a cash prize of €50,000.
The jury selected Messi from 27 nominations representing 12 nationalities. Alongside his remarkable achievements on the pitch, the jury highlighted his sustained charitable efforts to improve access to education and healthcare for disadvantaged children. His consistency, humility and commitment to teamwork were also recognised.
The honour marks another significant milestone in Messi’s career, recognising not only his achievements in football but also his contribution to society through charitable initiatives. He is the first individual footballer to receive the Princess of Asturias Award for Sports.
