PSG Travel to Spain as Luis Enrique Warns Against Complacency

Paris Saint-Germain have made a flying start to their Champions League campaign. After opening with a 6–0 demolition of Slovan Bratislava, the reigning European champions followed it up with impressive 4–0 victories over Manchester City and Barcelona. Three wins from three have put PSG among the leaders of the league phase.

But Luis Enrique does not want those results to create complacency.

PSG travel to Spain on Tuesday to face Villarreal at the Estadio de la Cerámica in Matchday 4 of the Champions League. The match kicks off at 9pm CET.

‘Past results count for nothing’

Enrique has warned his players that victories over Manchester City and Barcelona will mean nothing once the ball starts rolling against Villarreal.

The PSG manager stressed that his team must maintain ambition, quality and intensity throughout the entire match. Relying on their previous results would be a major mistake, he said.

His message was clear: PSG must prove from the opening minutes that they are ready to fight for another victory.

Enrique respects Villarreal

Villarreal have not enjoyed the same start in Europe, losing two of their opening three league-phase matches. But Enrique insists their results do not accurately reflect their quality.

The PSG boss specifically praised Villarreal head coach Iñigo Pérez, describing him as a young and positive coach with a clear footballing identity. Enrique also pointed to Villarreal’s performances against strong opposition, including Liverpool, where he felt the Spanish side deserved more from the game.

According to Enrique, Villarreal are still in the early stages of their project but have already shown plenty of promising signs.

A major test for Villarreal

For Iñigo Pérez, meanwhile, the match represents an opportunity for Villarreal to measure their progress against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

The Spanish coach believes facing PSG can help his players strengthen their belief in the tactical and collective development of the team. Despite their recent disappointment against Espanyol, Pérez says the importance of the Champions League occasion has already lifted the mood around the squad.

Villarreal will therefore look to make the most of home advantage, while PSG will attempt to extend their perfect Champions League run.

For Enrique, however, the equation is simple: the three previous wins do not matter anymore.

On Spanish soil, PSG must start again—and prove once more why they are the reigning European champions.
