Manchester United have been drawn into fresh controversy following their reported 2–0 Champions League defeat to Atletico Madrid. Argentine defender Lisandro Martinez has come under scrutiny after publicly criticising the club’s transfer strategy and questioning whether the squad is strong enough to compete at the highest level.
Speaking to Amazon Prime after the match, Martinez reportedly directed his criticism towards United technical director Jason Wilcox. The defender said he had expected greater investment and long-term vision from the club’s hierarchy, arguing that the current squad was not strong enough to compete consistently in the Champions League.
Martinez also appeared to defend manager Michael Carrick, suggesting that repeatedly changing managers would not solve the club’s problems. He stressed the need to address wider issues within the club, including squad planning and recruitment.
The lack of alternative options at left-back and centre-forward has also raised questions about United’s squad depth. Martinez’s comments have been interpreted as criticism of the club’s recruitment decisions rather than a direct attack on Carrick.
However, the defender could face disciplinary action for speaking publicly about internal club matters. According to football journalist Laurie Whitwell, United are considering a substantial fine, while his availability for Sunday’s match against Leeds United could also be under review.
Carrick, meanwhile, has sought to ease the tension, acknowledging that players can become frustrated and emotional after a defeat.
Martinez’s comments have prompted mixed reactions among supporters and analysts. While some view his remarks as a legitimate concern about the squad’s limitations, others believe such issues should be addressed internally.
The situation has added another layer of uncertainty around Martinez’s position at Manchester United, with attention now focused on whether the club will take formal disciplinary action.
