PSG-Lyon match postponed for security reasons; rescheduled for October 26
The highly anticipated Ligue 1 match between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Olympique Lyonnais has been postponed by one day. Following a decision by the Paris police authorities, the match will now take place on Monday, October 26, instead of Sunday.
According to a report by Eurosport, this eighth-round Ligue 1 fixture was originally scheduled for Sunday, October 25, at 8:45 PM local time at PSG’s home ground, the Parc des Princes. Under the new schedule, the match will kick off at 8:30 PM on Monday.
Why was the match postponed?
Due to planned protests and gatherings in Paris on Saturday, October 24, the police authorities denied permission to host the match, citing security concerns. The French Ministry of the Interior has announced the deployment of approximately 70,000 police and gendarmerie officers across the country, with a significant portion stationed in the capital, Paris.
The Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP)—the governing body for professional football in France—stated that it has accepted the police's decision. Although both PSG and Lyon initially hoped to play the match as originally scheduled on Sunday, the authorities' directive necessitated a change in the schedule.
PSG to play on the day of the Ballon d’Or ceremony
With the match rescheduled, PSG will now be in action on the same day as the 2026 Ballon d’Or awards ceremony. Consequently, one of football’s most prestigious individual award ceremonies and a major French league match will take place on the same evening.
PSG also played a league match on the day of the Ballon d’Or ceremony in 2025; on that occasion, they suffered a 1–0 defeat away to Olympique de Marseille. During that same year’s ceremony, PSG’s Ousmane Dembélé won the Ballon d’Or.
This scheduling change may impact the plans of players, fans, and broadcasters alike. Nevertheless, the authorities decided to postpone the match by one day in the interest of public safety.
