Real Madrid’s goal-fest at the Bernabéu: breaking their own record to create new history

"Nights at the Bernabéu feel long for the opposition"—a common saying about Real Madrid’s home ground that the Spanish club continues to prove true time and again. Beyond simply defeating their opponents at the Santiago Bernabéu, they are also setting new records by scoring goal after goal. With their 4–1 victory over Leipzig, Real Madrid has now scored in 45 consecutive home matches in the Champions League.

The record was secured in the 43rd minute of last night’s match against Leipzig, thanks to a goal by Bernardo Silva. Real Madrid has now become the first team to score in 45 consecutive home matches in European competition. Interestingly, in setting this new benchmark, the 15-time European champions have surpassed their own previous record.

Making history by breaking their own record

Between 2011 and 2018, Real Madrid held a record of scoring in 44 consecutive home matches in the Champions League. That streak came to an end on December 12, 2018, following a 3–0 defeat to CSKA Moscow.

Since then, the Madrid club has rediscovered its scoring touch. From that match until last night, Real Madrid has found the back of the net in every single home game in the Champions League, establishing a new record of 45 consecutive home matches with at least one goal.

Statistics show that Real Madrid has scored in 89 of their last 90 home matches in European competition—a testament to the team's consistent attacking prowess at the Bernabéu.

Goals from Mbappé, Güler, and Diomande

Kylian Mbappé, Arda Güler, and Yann Diomande were on the scoresheet in the 4–1 win against Leipzig. After the match, coach José Mourinho expressed his satisfaction with the team's performance, noting that the partnership between Mbappé and Diomande brought joy to the fans.

Vinícius Júnior was also a major talking point. In the 70th minute of the match, Mourinho replaced the Brazilian winger with Diomande. Although questions have been raised about Vini’s recent performances, the coach remains satisfied with his play.

Vinicius has failed to complete a successful dribble in his last two matches. Across all competitions this season, he has scored only one goal in 11 appearances and has not found the back of the net in his last nine outings. Meanwhile, Diomande is gradually proving his worth as a viable alternative.

Regarding Vinicius’s performance, Mourinho remarked, "Vini played well. He could have scored a fantastic goal, but the goalkeeper made an excellent save. I wouldn't say he’s upset—that’s a feeling only he can truly explain—but his coach is happy."

Explaining the potential reason behind Vinicius’s frustration, Mourinho suggested that it might stem from a deep desire to contribute even more for the team and the fans.

El Clásico Awaits: Real Madrid Prepares

Following their victory against Leipzig, Real Madrid faces a major test: El Clásico. This coming Sunday night, they will take on Barcelona at the Camp Nou in La Liga.

When asked about his confidence heading into the match, Mourinho stated, "It’s just another league match—though, of course, not quite like the others. We will go there fully prepared."

Having set a record at the Bernabéu, Real Madrid will now aim for a victory on Barcelona’s home turf. It remains to be seen whether they can maintain that momentum in the heat of the El Clásico battle.
