Julian Alvarez has apologised to Atletico Madrid supporters after scoring the decisive goal in his side’s 1–0 La Liga victory over Deportivo La Coruna. The Argentine striker acknowledged that his earlier comments about a possible move to Barcelona, and the way he handled the situation, had upset fans.
Alvarez scored the only goal of the match to secure an important victory for Atletico. The strike also offered further evidence that the forward is gradually regaining his form.
Speaking to Movistar about comments he made during the World Cup period, Alvarez said: “I apologise to the fans for the things I said during the World Cup. The way I said them and the time I chose to say them were wrong.”
The striker had been booed by sections of the Atletico crowd during the opening matches of the season. He said he understood why supporters had reacted negatively.
“I understand why the fans were upset. Considering how much support they have given me since I arrived at Atletico, their reaction is understandable. They have shown me a lot of generosity. Now it is time for me to work and give everything I have,” Alvarez said.
The Argentine also explained that he was feeling better physically and personally.
“I am feeling better and better. I have always received support. I am working to improve, and physically I feel better than before. When things are going well in your life, it also shows on the pitch. We are professional footballers, but other aspects of life affect us too.”
Many Atletico supporters applauded Alvarez after his goal against Deportivo, although some sections of the crowd continued to express their displeasure. His performance may help rebuild the relationship, but winning back the trust of every supporter will take time.
Atletico coach Diego Simeone welcomed the striker’s apology.

“I have great respect for people who apologise, because apologising is not easy. I am very happy for Alvarez. I think he is feeling much more relieved now. I am delighted with him as a player. We need him,” Simeone said at his press conference.
The goal was Alvarez’s first in La Liga for Atletico in eight months. His previous league goal at the club’s home ground had come in November 2025. He had also scored in the Champions League four days earlier, suggesting that the Argentine is beginning to rediscover his scoring touch.
The victory over Deportivo reduced Atletico’s gap to Barcelona to two points. For Alvarez, the decisive strike was more than just a match-winning goal: it was an opportunity to begin repairing his relationship with the supporters. His challenge now is to turn his apology into consistent performances on the pitch.
