Late Header Saves Brazil From Defeat Against Australia

Brazil were denied a disappointing defeat in their new era as a late header rescued them from Australia in a 1–1 friendly draw at Queensland Country Bank Stadium.

Australia looked set for a memorable victory after Nestory Irankunda produced a stunning free-kick in the 68th minute. The attacking midfielder sent the ball over Brazil’s wall and into the net before celebrating with an acrobatic backflip.

Irankunda had already threatened early in the match. His powerful effort in the seventh minute forced an excellent save from Brazil goalkeeper Hugo Souza. At the other end, Australia goalkeeper Patrick Beach also kept out attempts from Raphinha, Vinicius Junior and Bruno Guimaraes.

Brazil thought they had taken the lead just before half-time. Estêvão finished from Endrick’s assist in stoppage time and celebrated with his teammates.

However, the goal was later ruled out following a VAR review. Bruno Guimaraes had committed a foul in the build-up, meaning Brazil’s lead was cancelled.

Brazil continued to create chances after the break, but struggled to find the finishing touch. Raphinha came close in the 63rd minute when his effort narrowly missed the post.

Five minutes later, Australia finally found the breakthrough through Irankunda’s brilliant free-kick. With Brazil unable to respond immediately, Australia appeared on course for a famous win.

But Brazil refused to give up.

In the fifth minute of stoppage time, substitute Ryan headed home from Raphinha’s corner to level the match and rescue the five-time world champions.

The draw also extended Australia’s long wait for a victory over Brazil. Their last win against the South American giants came in 2001, when they secured a 1–0 victory in the FIFA Confederations Cup. It remains Australia’s only win over Brazil.

For Carlo Ancelotti, the result was another reminder of the work ahead as Brazil begin a new chapter following Neymar’s departure and the disappointment of the previous World Cup. The Selecao avoided defeat against Australia, but had to rely on a dramatic late equaliser to do so.
