Liton's century against Afghanistan; a new record surpassing Ashraful.

Liton Das scored a magnificent century in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in Abu Dhabi. Having already reached the milestone of 9,000 runs across all three formats of international cricket for Bangladesh, the wicketkeeper-batsman has now etched his name in the record books by scoring a Test century. He has surpassed Mohammad Ashraful to claim sole possession of fifth place on the list of Bangladesh's highest Test century-makers.

Liton steadied the ship after Bangladesh lost a flurry of wickets. Arriving at the crease on the afternoon of the third day following Mushfiqur Rahim's dismissal, he witnessed the quick departures of Najmul Hossain Shanto and Hasan Mahmud. Bangladesh found themselves under pressure after losing three wickets for just 11 runs.

In that situation, Liton carried the innings forward alongside Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He enjoyed some luck early on; the right-handed batter survived two dropped catches off the bowling of Qais Ahmad. Capitalizing on those reprieves, he played aggressively to boost the team's total.

Century off 115 balls; second Test ton of the year

Liton completed his half-century in the first session. He needed 19 more runs to reach his century during the day's second session, a feat he achieved in just 19 balls. The Bangladeshi batter reached the three-figure mark off 115 balls.

This marks Liton's second Test century of the year; he had previously scored a hundred against Pakistan in May. With this innings against Afghanistan, Liton has once again demonstrated his capabilities.

9,000 runs in international cricket

Liton had scored 53 runs in the first innings against Afghanistan. Before the start of the Test, his aggregate across all three formats stood at 8,929 runs. Even after the first innings, he remained 18 runs shy of the 9,000-run milestone.

In the second innings, after adding 13 runs to his overnight score of 5, Liton took a single off Zia-ur-Rehman on the fourth day to enter the 9,000-run club in international cricket. He is the fifth batter from Bangladesh to achieve this feat. Before him, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, and Mahmudullah had reached this milestone.

Surpassing Ashraful on the Test century list

The century against Afghanistan marks the seventh of Litton's Test career. Previously, with six centuries, he had shared the fifth spot among Bangladeshi batters with Mohammad Ashraful. With this new century, Litton has moved ahead of Ashraful to claim the fifth position outright.

The record for the most Test centuries for Bangladesh is still held by Mushfiqur Rahim, with 14. Mominul Haque holds second place with 13 centuries. Tamim Iqbal has 10 centuries, while Najmul Hossain Shanto sits in fourth place with nine.

Litton's statistics across all three formats

Litton has scored 3,409 runs in Test cricket. In this format, he has seven centuries and 22 half-centuries. In ODIs, he has accumulated 2,869 runs, including five centuries and 14 half-centuries.

Litton has played the highest number of T20 matches for Bangladesh—124. In this format, he has scored 2,704 runs and recorded 16 half-centuries; however, he has yet to score a century in T20s.

With this crucial century against Afghanistan, Litton Das has added new achievements to both his personal milestones and record tally.
