Liverpool FC History: 134 Years of Glory, 20 League Titles and Six European Cups

Liverpool Football Club is one of the most successful and historic clubs in English and European football. Founded in 1892, the Reds have built a remarkable legacy at domestic and continental level.

Liverpool have won 20 English top-flight league titles, six European Cups/Champions Leagues, eight FA Cups, 10 League Cups, three UEFA Cups, four UEFA Super Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup.

The Birth of Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC officially came into existence on June 3, 1892, after founder John Houlding and his associates split from Everton following a dispute over Anfield and its management.

With Everton leaving Anfield, Houlding decided to establish a new club. The Board of Trade formally recognised Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Company Limited on June 3, 1892.

Liverpool played their first match at Anfield on September 1, 1892, defeating Rotherham Town 7-1 in a friendly.

Liverpool's First League Success

Liverpool quickly established themselves in English football. The club won its first league championship in the 1900-01 season and added another title in 1905-06.

Further championships followed in 1921-22, 1922-23 and 1946-47.

Bill Shankly and the Transformation of Liverpool

Bill Shankly became Liverpool manager in 1959 and transformed the club's fortunes.

After returning to the top flight in 1962, Liverpool won the league title in 1963-64 and again in 1965-66.

Shankly also delivered Liverpool's first FA Cup. The Reds defeated Leeds United 2-1 at Wembley in the 1965 final, ending a long wait for the famous domestic trophy.

Liverpool's First European Trophy

Liverpool won their first major European trophy in 1973 when Shankly's team defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach to win the UEFA Cup.

Three years later, Bob Paisley's Liverpool won the competition again in 1976.

The Bob Paisley Golden Era

Bob Paisley took charge in 1974 and built one of the most dominant teams in European football history.

Under Paisley, Liverpool won league titles in 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1982 and 1983. The club also won three European Cups during his reign—in 1977, 1978 and 1981.

Liverpool's first European Cup came in 1977, when they defeated Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1 in Rome.

They successfully defended the European crown in 1978 and won it again in 1981.

The 1984 European Cup Triumph

Joe Fagan succeeded Paisley and continued Liverpool's European dominance. In the 1983-84 season, Liverpool won another European Cup.

That gave the club four European Cups in just seven years and cemented Liverpool's status as one of Europe's elite clubs.

Kenny Dalglish and Domestic Dominance

Kenny Dalglish became player-manager in 1985 and continued Liverpool's domestic dominance.

Liverpool won the league in 1985-86, 1987-88 and 1989-90. In 1985-86, the Reds also won the FA Cup to complete a famous domestic double.

The 1989-90 league title would become particularly significant because Liverpool then had to wait nearly 30 years before winning the championship again.

The 2001 Cup Treble

Liverpool enjoyed one of the most memorable seasons in their modern history in 2000-01 under Gérard Houllier.

The Reds won the League Cup, FA Cup and UEFA Cup in the same season.

The UEFA Cup final against Alavés became one of the most dramatic European finals ever. After an extraordinary 4-4 scoreline, Liverpool won in extra time through a golden goal.

The Miracle of Istanbul

The 2005 Champions League final remains one of the defining moments in Liverpool's history.

Against AC Milan in Istanbul, Liverpool were 3-0 down at half-time. But Steven Gerrard, Vladimir Smicer and Xabi Alonso scored within a remarkable six-minute period to bring the Reds level.

The match eventually went to penalties, where Liverpool won 3-2 to claim their fifth European Cup.

The comeback is widely remembered as the Miracle of Istanbul.

The 2006 FA Cup Final

Liverpool produced another dramatic comeback in the 2006 FA Cup final against West Ham United.

The match ended 3-3 after extra time before Liverpool won the penalty shootout 3-1. Steven Gerrard's extraordinary performance helped give the match its famous nickname: The Gerrard Final.

The Jürgen Klopp Era

Jürgen Klopp became Liverpool manager in 2015 and began another transformation of the club.

Under Klopp, Liverpool developed into one of Europe's strongest sides, combining high-intensity football with a powerful attacking identity. Klopp remained in charge from 2015 to 2024.

Champions League Glory in 2019

Liverpool reached the Champions League final in 2019 and defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 in Madrid.

It was Liverpool's sixth European Cup/Champions League triumph and their first since 2005.

European and World Champions

Liverpool followed their Champions League triumph by winning the UEFA Super Cup against Chelsea in 2019.

Later that year, they travelled to Qatar for the FIFA Club World Cup. Liverpool defeated Monterrey in the semi-final before beating Flamengo 1-0 in extra time in the final through Roberto Firmino's goal.

It was the first FIFA Club World Cup in Liverpool's history.

The 2020 Premier League Title

Liverpool finally ended their 30-year wait for the English league title in the 2019-20 season.

Klopp's team were almost unstoppable throughout the campaign, winning 26 and drawing one of their opening 27 league matches. They eventually finished with 99 points and secured the Premier League title.

It was Liverpool's 19th English top-flight championship.

FA Cup and League Cup Success in 2022

The 2021-22 season brought two more domestic trophies.

Liverpool won both the League Cup and FA Cup against Chelsea, with both finals ending 0-0 after extra time and being decided by penalty shootouts.

The League Cup victory was Liverpool's ninth in the competition at the time, while the FA Cup success brought their total to eight.

Record 10th League Cup in 2024

Liverpool won the League Cup again in 2024, defeating Chelsea 1-0 after extra time at Wembley.

Virgil van Dijk scored the decisive 118th-minute goal.

The victory gave Liverpool a record-extending 10 League Cup titles, making them the most successful club in the competition's history.

Liverpool's 20th League Title in 2025

Liverpool's most recent major domestic success came in the 2024-25 season.

Under Arne Slot, in his first season as head coach, Liverpool won the Premier League title. It was the club's 20th English top-flight championship, bringing them level with the highest tally in English league history.
