Manchester United Fight Back from Two Goals Down to Beat Roma 3-2
Manchester United produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Roma 3-2 at Old Trafford in the Champions League. Bruno Fernandes sparked the revival with a retaken penalty before Matheus Cunha scored twice to complete a memorable victory for Michael Carrick’s side.
United had looked in serious trouble after conceding twice in the opening 17 minutes. However, a dramatic turnaround after the break ended their nine-match winless run in all competitions and delivered a much-needed boost for the under-pressure manager.
Roma take control in the first half
Roma opened the scoring in the 11th minute. Rodrigo Mora delivered an excellent pass to Matías Soulé, who had enough time to control the ball and calmly finish past United goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
The visitors doubled their advantage six minutes later. Soulé’s effort struck the hand of United defender Ayden Heaven, prompting the referee to award a penalty. Donyell Malen converted from the spot, sending Lammens the wrong way.
Roma nearly made it 3-0 soon afterwards, but Lammens managed to deny Soulé. The United goalkeeper also kept out another attempt from Malen, while Soulé came close again just before half-time with a curling effort that went narrowly wide.
United struggled to create clear chances in the opening period and went into the break trailing by two goals.
Fernandes penalty sparks the comeback
United returned with greater urgency after half-time. In the 55th minute, Roma defender Gianluca Mancini brought down Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area, giving the hosts a chance to get back into the game.
Bruno Fernandes stepped up, but his first attempt was saved by Roma goalkeeper Devis Vásquez. However, the penalty had to be retaken because Roma players had encroached into the area before the kick. Fernandes made no mistake with his second attempt, reducing the deficit in the 58th minute.
United almost equalised two minutes later when Bryan Mbeumo’s effort struck one post, travelled across the goal and came back off the other. Roma captain Bryan Cristante also helped preserve the visitors’ lead by clearing another United effort off the line.
Cunha turns the game around
United’s pressure finally paid off in the 83rd minute. Roma defender Leonardo Balerdi failed to deal with Fernandes’s cross, allowing Cunha to collect the loose ball and finish from close range to make it 2-2.
Just three minutes later, Cunha completed the comeback. Receiving a pass from substitute Shea Lacey, the Brazilian forward unleashed a powerful shot from a tight angle and beat Vásquez at his near post.
Old Trafford erupted as United moved ahead 3-2. Cunha celebrated by taking off his shirt and joining the supporters, earning a yellow card in the process.
His night ended with a dismissal in stoppage time. A foul on Balerdi earned him a second yellow card, leaving United to defend their lead with 10 men. They held on to secure a crucial victory.
Relief for Carrick as United return to winning ways
The result gives United six points from four Champions League matches, placing them 17th in the league-phase standings. Roma remain on four points in 19th place.
For United, the comeback was about more than three points. After a difficult run of results, the victory offered a major lift in confidence and some much-needed relief for Carrick, whose position had come under increasing scrutiny.
