Portugal Coach Says Ronaldo Can Return to National Team

Portugal coach Jorge Jesus has kept the door open for Cristiano Ronaldo to return to the national team, but insists that the final decision must come from the 41-year-old forward himself.

After Portugal’s 2–1 win over Norway, Jesus addressed Ronaldo’s decision to leave the national team camp. The coach, who previously worked with Ronaldo at Al Nassr, said, “If he wants to return to the national team, he will. We can speak before the next squad announcement. But the decision has to be Cristiano’s.”

Jesus also stressed how important Ronaldo remains to Portugal. He recalled telling the five-time Ballon d’Or winner when the squad was first announced: “I need you. Whether you play or not, I need you with me.”

Ronaldo started Portugal’s first match against Wales under Jesus but was left on the bench against Norway. He warmed up during the second half but was not brought onto the pitch. It was the first time since 2008 that Ronaldo had remained on the bench for the entire 90 minutes of a competitive match despite being included in the squad.

Jesus later confirmed that Ronaldo would not start against Denmark in Copenhagen. The forward subsequently left the national team camp. Ronaldo later wrote on social media that he would explain the reason for his departure to the Portuguese people “at the right time.”

Portugal captain Joao Cancelo backed Ronaldo, saying he remains the team’s captain and the greatest player in the country’s history. Defender Nuno Mendes also welcomed the possibility of Ronaldo returning, saying the team would receive him “with open arms.”

Ronaldo has scored 146 goals in 234 appearances for Portugal, holding the world records for both international appearances and goals. He has also helped Portugal win Euro 2016 and the UEFA Nations League twice.

In Ronaldo’s absence, Goncalo Ramos has strengthened his position in the attack, scoring in each of his three starts.

Jesus believes Ronaldo should decide how he wants to end his international career. “Cristiano’s time with the national team should end the way he wants. It is his decision how he wants to finish,” the Portugal coach said.
