Sheffield coach furious over Hamza’s red card, alleges injustice in referee’s decision

Sheffield United managed to level the score after falling behind 2–0 against Portsmouth at Fratton Park. However, they conceded a goal in the 89th minute, ultimately losing the match 3–2. Compounding the disappointment of the defeat, Bangladesh national team midfielder Hamza Choudhury was shown a red card—having received a second yellow card in the 44th minute—and was forced to leave the pitch. Sheffield manager Chris Wilder could not accept the referee's decision.

During the Championship match, Hamza committed two fouls against Portsmouth winger Ryan Kavuma-McQueen within the span of nine minutes. Each incident resulted in a yellow card, leading to his dismissal. Sheffield’s manager, however, has questioned the decision to issue the second yellow card.

Wilder questions the referee’s decision

While attempting a nutmeg on Ryan—who joined Portsmouth on loan from Chelsea—Hamza collided with him, causing the winger to fall to the ground. According to Sheffield manager Wilder, referee Oliver Langford initially indicated to Hamza that he would not be shown a red card; however, the official subsequently changed his mind and issued a second yellow card.

Expressing his frustration after the match, Wilder remarked, "Where is Hamza supposed to go? Is he Mr. Crapper, who can just vanish into thin air? These kinds of incidents are happening all over the pitch—Sam McCallum, for instance, was obstructed three or four times."

Voicing his dissatisfaction with the officiating, he added, "I honestly don't know where Hamza is supposed to go. I have to be careful, as I might not be able to say exactly what I want to say. Even in the final moments of the match, one of our players was held back inside the box—it was clear as day; his shirt was practically being pulled off."

"We have been treated unfairly"

Criticizing the referee's call, Wilder stated, "The discussion was that the referee was not going to show him a red card." ‘Then I saw the opposing players gathering around. That might well be a form of gamesmanship. However, it does feel like we were treated somewhat unfairly.’

Sheffield in 15th place in the standings

In the Championship—the second tier of English football—Sheffield United currently sit in 15th place with 12 points from 10 matches. They are 11 points behind the league leaders, Swansea City, who have played the same number of games.

Hamza Choudhury has made three appearances for Sheffield this season. The midfielder, who has Bangladeshi heritage, has yet to score a goal.
