India produced one of the most remarkable ODI run chases in recent memory, chasing down West Indies' massive target of 406 with just two wickets down and 39 balls remaining in Guwahati.

Captain Shubman Gill was at the heart of the extraordinary victory, smashing an unbeaten 223 to rewrite several ODI records in the process.

Gill's 223* is now the highest individual score in an ODI while chasing. He surpassed Australia's Glenn Maxwell, who previously held the record with an unbeaten 201 against Afghanistan at the 2023 World Cup.

The Indian captain also set a new record for the highest individual score by an ODI captain. The previous mark belonged to India's Virender Sehwag, who scored 219 against West Indies in 2011.

Gill also broke the previous Indian record for the fastest ODI double century. Ishan Kishan had reached 200 from 126 balls against Bangladesh in Chattogram in 2022.

The record-breaking performance came on a remarkable batting day in Guwahati. West Indies had earlier posted 405, but India made the huge target look surprisingly manageable, reaching 406 for the loss of just two wickets.

The combined score of 811 runs is another major statistic from the match. It is only the fourth time in ODI history that the two teams have collectively scored at least 800 runs in a single game.

India also strengthened their record against West Indies in ODI series. The victory marked India's 14th ODI series win against the Caribbean side, the most series victories they have recorded against any single opponent.

Another milestone came with India's team total. The 406-run chase marked the ninth time India have scored 400 or more in an ODI, moving them ahead of South Africa, who have reached the landmark eight times.

With Gill's unbeaten 223, India's successful 406-run chase and a series of team and individual records, the Guwahati ODI will go down as one of the most extraordinary run-fests in ODI cricket.
