Tri-nation ODI series in Rawalpindi: Cautious start for Pakistan against Sri Lanka

A tri-nation ODI series, organized to prepare for the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup and to help teams gain more experience in 50-over cricket, kicked off today. The opening match of the series is taking place at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium between hosts Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis won the toss and elected to field first.

Toss and Pitch Conditions
The pre-match pitch report indicated that the historic Rawalpindi wicket is traditionally a batter's paradise. The surface is firm and evenly rolled, allowing the ball to come onto the bat very nicely. Taking into account the daytime temperature and overall conditions, Sri Lankan captain Kusal Mendis opted for a chase-oriented strategy. Meanwhile, Pakistan captain Shaheen Shah Afridi mentioned that, had they won the toss, they too would have preferred to bat first.

Team Changes and Debuts
Pakistan has fielded its strongest possible combination for this home tri-nation series. Today’s match marks the ODI debut for young wicketkeeper-batter Saad Baig, who becomes the 262nd player to represent Pakistan in the ODI format; he has been assigned the number four batting position. The Pakistani side features experienced players like Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman, while the pace attack is spearheaded by captain Shaheen Afridi, alongside Naseem Shah and Haris Rauf.

On the other side, the Sri Lankan playing XI includes a blend of experience and youth, featuring players such as Avishka Fernando, Kamindu Mendis, Dasun Shanaka, and Maheesh Theekshana. Their bowling attack consists of three frontline pacers, a pace-bowling all-rounder, and a specialist spinner.

Early Match Situation
Pakistan faced an early setback after being sent in to bat first. In the fourth over of the innings, opening batter Saim Ayub (7 runs) was dismissed by Dilshan Madushanka and headed back to the pavilion. At the other end, however, the experienced Fakhar Zaman and former captain Babar Azam are working to steady the innings. After the first 5 overs, Pakistan’s score stands at 31 for 1. Fakhar Zaman and Babar Azam are looking to build a foundation to extend the innings while also boosting the team's total.
