Lionel Messi has ended his international career with Argentina, and his playing days at club level could also come to an end in the coming years. But retirement may not mean leaving football behind. Instead of becoming a coach, Messi could take on a new role as a club owner.

Messi signed a new contract with Inter Miami in 2025 that keeps him at the MLS club until 2028. According to BBC Sport, the agreement also includes an opportunity for Messi to acquire a stake in the club after his playing career comes to an end.

His involvement in club ownership has already expanded beyond the United States. In April, Messi became an owner of fifth-tier Spanish club UE Cornellà. Later in October, he also acquired a majority stake in second-division side CD Eldense.

There has also been speculation that Messi could return to his boyhood club Newell’s Old Boys after retirement. However, according to BBC Sport, there have been no formal talks between Messi and the Argentine club over a potential return. There is also little expectation within Messi’s inner circle that such a move will happen.

Instead, Messi appears to be planning his post-playing future around Spain and the United States. Having achieved almost everything possible as a footballer, the Argentine icon could remain involved in the sport in a very different capacity.

While many football legends turn to coaching after retirement, Messi could choose another path. The player who once ruled the pitch may eventually be seen in the boardroom—as a club owner.
