Cristiano Ronaldo has paid tribute to Lionel Messi following the Argentine superstar’s farewell from international football. The Portuguese icon left a message on Messi’s Instagram post after the forward played his final match for Argentina.
For nearly two decades, Messi and Ronaldo have been at the centre of world football and are widely regarded as two of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Their rivalry has defined an era of football, both at club and international level.
Messi ended his international career after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Argentina lost 1-0 to Spain in the final before Messi returned for one more match with the national team to bid farewell to supporters.
Following that final appearance, Messi shared a post on Instagram thanking the people who had been part of his international journey.
Ronaldo responded in the comments with a message of respect for his long-time rival.
“Leo, you played for your country for so many years and left behind a history that will last forever. I have the utmost respect for everything you achieved with Argentina. A hug,” Ronaldo wrote.
Messi’s greatest achievement with Argentina came in 2022, when he led the team to World Cup glory. He has also won the Ballon d’Or eight times, further cementing his place among football’s all-time greats.
Ronaldo’s message added a moment of mutual respect to the international farewell of one of the defining figures of modern football.
