Shai Hope’s Record 162 Helps West Indies Avoid ODI Whitewash Against India
West Indies saved themselves from an ODI series whitewash in spectacular fashion, chasing down India’s massive target of 352 runs with 10 balls to spare.
The series had started with India dominating the Caribbean side, but the final match produced a completely different story as Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 powered West Indies to a record run chase against the hosts.
India won the toss and elected to bat first in New Chandigarh, Punjab. However, they suffered an early setback as captain Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli were dismissed with only four runs on the board.
Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad then steadied the innings with a 137-run partnership. Rohit scored 92, while Gaikwad contributed 57.
KL Rahul provided the late acceleration, smashing an unbeaten 129 from just 87 balls, including 10 fours and six sixes. It was Rahul’s ninth ODI century and his highest score in the format.
India eventually finished on 351 for seven in their 50 overs.
Hope Leads Historic Run Chase
West Indies responded with confidence from the beginning. Shai Hope and Amir Jangoo put together a 67-run partnership before Hope continued the chase alongside Keemo Paul.
Hope was eventually the difference between the two sides. The West Indies batter remained unbeaten on 162, guiding his team through the enormous target without allowing the required rate to become an obstacle.
West Indies reached 352 with 10 balls remaining, completing a record chase and avoiding a clean sweep against India.
After India had dominated the opening matches of the series, West Indies produced a stunning finale, turning a seemingly daunting target into a memorable victory.
