Sourav Ganguly Named Delhi Capitals Head Coach for IPL 2027
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly is set to take on a new role in the Indian Premier League after being appointed head coach of the Delhi Capitals ahead of the 2027 season.
Ganguly will replace Hemang Badani, who served as Delhi Capitals’ head coach over the previous two seasons.
The former India opener already has a long association with the franchise. He joined Delhi Capitals as an advisor in 2019 and later served as Director of Cricket for both the men’s and women’s Capitals franchises after completing his tenure as BCCI president.
Ganguly expressed his excitement after taking charge of the team and said he was looking forward to the new challenge.
“Delhi Capitals is a franchise very close to my heart, and over the years I have developed a deep bond with the team. I have previously worked closely with the owners, management, support staff and players, so this challenge is extremely exciting for me,” Ganguly said.
He added that the squad contains a number of talented players and that the team has produced some impressive cricket recently. His aim will be to build a strong and fearless side ahead of the new season.
Delhi Capitals are among the long-standing IPL franchises yet to win the title. Their closest attempt came in 2020, when they reached their first IPL final but lost to Mumbai Indians.
In the following season, Delhi finished at the top of the league table but failed to reach the final. Since then, the franchise has been unable to qualify for the playoffs.
In the most recent season, Delhi finished sixth in the points table under captain Axar Patel and coach Hemang Badani.
Ganguly will now take charge with the primary objective of helping Delhi Capitals finally win their first IPL title.
The former India opener also has coaching experience outside the IPL. He previously served as head coach of Pretoria Capitals in South Africa’s SA20 league.
After working as a player, administrator and cricket director, Ganguly will now begin a new chapter in the IPL as Delhi Capitals’ head coach.
