Virat Kohli continues to rewrite ODI history. The Indian batting superstar achieved two major world records during the first ODI against New Zealand in Auckland on Wednesday, becoming the first batter to score 13,000 runs at No. 3 in ODIs and the highest run-scorer in the format's history during run chases.
Kohli reached the 13,000-run milestone at the No. 3 position after scoring his 12th run in India's chase at Eden Park. He is the first batter ever to achieve the feat in ODI cricket.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting is second on the list with 12,662 runs at No. 3. Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara follows with 9,747 runs. Kohli and Ponting remain the only two players to have crossed the 10,000-run mark at the position.
Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record for the most runs in ODI run chases. Tendulkar had scored 8,720 runs while chasing in the 50-over format. Kohli went past that mark when he reached 54 runs during his innings against New Zealand, taking his career tally to 8,741 by the end of the match.
The 37-year-old remained unbeaten on 74 off just 51 deliveries, hitting 13 fours and one six. The innings also marked his 80th half-century in ODI cricket.
Rain interrupted India's chase, reducing the target to 143 in 32 overs. Kohli's contribution helped India secure a five-wicket victory and take an early lead in the five-match series.
Kohli also drew level with Ponting for the most ODI runs scored against New Zealand. Both batters now have 1,971 runs against the Black Caps, leaving Kohli just one run away from taking sole possession of the record.
The latest milestones add to Kohli's remarkable legacy in ODI cricket. Widely known as the 'Chase Master' for his consistency in run chases, he once again demonstrated why he remains one of the most dependable batters in the format.
