Michael Carrick to Remain in Charge for Manchester United vs Chelsea

Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for Saturday’s Premier League clash against Chelsea, despite mounting pressure over his position.

United’s senior officials held discussions about Carrick’s future on Monday following Sunday’s 3–0 home defeat to Bournemouth. However, no final decision was announced, and Carrick returned to Carrington on Tuesday to oversee training.

A club source said Carrick and his players have been given an opportunity to turn the situation around, with United now focused on preparing for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea.

Manchester United Winless in Eight

Carrick is under intense pressure after United extended their winless run to eight matches in all competitions with the defeat to Bournemouth.

The club have not won a Premier League match since beating newly promoted Ipswich Town on August 30. United are currently 16th in the table, just one point above the relegation zone.

Bruno Fernandes Decision Adds to Pressure

Carrick’s position came under further scrutiny after he left captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench against Bournemouth.

The decision came only four days after the Portugal midfielder publicly criticised United’s tactics following their 4–1 Champions League defeat by Como.

Fernandes did not come off the bench against Bournemouth. Carrick described his decision as a purely football-related choice rather than a disciplinary measure.

Fans Show Support for Carrick

Despite the heavy defeat, Carrick received significant support from sections of the United fanbase.

As he walked towards the tunnel after the final whistle, thousands of supporters sang his name and applauded him. The mood changed moments later when the players were booed as they left the pitch.

The reaction highlighted the goodwill Carrick still enjoys after his long association with Manchester United, including a decorated 12-year playing career at the club.

‘I’m Carrying On as Normal’

Carrick has repeatedly accepted responsibility for United’s poor performances while protecting his players from criticism.

After the Bournemouth defeat, he said he understood the situation but would continue working as normal.

“I totally understand the situation. I'm not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. I'm carrying on as normal, and I love this place,” Carrick said.

He added that he would always do what he believed was best for the football club, whatever decision had to be made.

Carrick Previously Guided United to Third Place

Carrick’s current struggles are a stark contrast to the impact he had after taking charge in January following Ruben Amorim’s departure.

He helped United recover strongly and finish third in the Premier League, securing Champions League qualification. The club subsequently appointed him as permanent head coach in May.

However, United have struggled badly during the current campaign and have won just once in the Premier League.

Chelsea Clash a Major Test

Saturday’s trip to Chelsea is now a crucial opportunity for Carrick and his players.

United then face AS Roma in the Champions League before Premier League meetings with Aston Villa and Liverpool.

Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann have reportedly emerged as potential alternatives should United eventually decide to make a managerial change. For now, however, Carrick remains in charge and will lead the team at Stamford Bridge.

A positive result against Chelsea could give Carrick some breathing room, but the bigger challenge will be turning United’s overall form around and moving the club away from the relegation battle.
