Tanker Catches Fire in Strait of Hormuz as 9,000 US Troops Head to Middle East

Tensions surrounding the Iran-US conflict are rising again as a tanker caught fire after being struck by an unidentified object in the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States is sending roughly 9,000 sailors and Marines to the Middle East aboard a group of warships.

The developments come as Iran says it has received Washington's response to its latest ceasefire proposal. According to Reuters, Tehran received the US response through Qatari mediation, although major differences remain between the two sides over the terms and timing of any potential agreement.

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran's latest proposal as insufficient. He has also indicated that further military action against Iran after the November 3 US midterm elections remains possible.

Tanker Hit in Strait of Hormuz

The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said a supertanker was struck by an unidentified projectile while transiting the Strait of Hormuz, causing a fire on board.

The crew members were reported to be safe. However, details about the extent of the damage, the vessel's flag and the exact nature of its cargo were not immediately available.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most important energy shipping routes, making any incident involving commercial vessels particularly significant for regional security and global energy markets.

9,000 US Personnel Head to the Region

The US military is deploying approximately 9,000 additional sailors and Marines to the Middle East as Washington considers its next steps in the conflict with Iran.

According to US officials cited by the Associated Press, the force includes more than 7,000 sailors and around 2,000 Marines.

The deployment includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group and the cruiser USS Chosin. It also includes the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group, with the amphibious ships USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage.

The deployment could leave the United States with three aircraft carriers in the Middle East by the end of October. The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already in the region.

Iran-US Tensions Remain High

Despite diplomatic efforts, there has been little sign of a clear breakthrough between Tehran and Washington.

Trump has also claimed that early indications suggest Iran may have been linked to an incident involving the co-pilot of an Israel-bound flight. He warned of a strong US response if Iranian involvement is confirmed.

However, investigators have not publicly established an Iranian role in the incident, meaning the allegation remains unconfirmed.

With the Strait of Hormuz remaining a key flashpoint and additional US military forces moving toward the region, the latest developments add another layer of uncertainty to the ongoing Iran-US crisis.
