Barcelona Fined €602 in Julián Álvarez Case but Plans Appeal

Barcelona have been fined €602 by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) over their approach for Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez. The penalty is worth just over Tk 83,000, but Barcelona are unwilling to accept the ruling and plan to appeal the decision.

What happened in the Álvarez case?

Atlético Madrid accused Barcelona of contacting Álvarez before formally notifying the Spanish club, despite the Argentine forward being under contract.

The RFEF investigation found that Barcelona had indeed made contact with Álvarez's former agent Fernando Hidalgo before sending Atlético a written communication. According to the ruling, Barcelona sporting director Deco spoke with Hidalgo on May 15, 2026, while the first written communication to Atlético came on May 28.

However, the RFEF did not consider the incident a serious offence. Instead, it classified the breach as a minor infringement under Article 133 of its disciplinary regulations.

The federation concluded that the requirements for a more serious offence under Article 93—including conscious and repeated violations—had not been established.

Barcelona fined €602

The RFEF imposed a €602 fine on Barcelona. At an exchange rate of Tk 138.25 per euro, that is approximately Tk 83,228.

For a club of Barcelona's financial scale, the amount is symbolic. But the Catalan club's objection is not about the money. Barcelona believe accepting the punishment could be interpreted as accepting wrongdoing, which is why they intend to appeal the ruling. The club has 10 days to challenge the decision.

Why did Barcelona want Álvarez?

Barcelona had been looking for a long-term attacking solution and identified Álvarez as one of their preferred targets. The Catalan club reportedly made a €100 million offer for the Argentine forward.

Atlético, however, made it clear that they had no intention of selling Álvarez to a direct La Liga rival.

The situation became even more complicated after Álvarez discussed his future during the 2026 World Cup. He suggested that a transfer could potentially be beneficial for everyone, while reports later indicated that Barcelona was among his preferred destinations. The comments angered Atlético supporters, with the striker being booed at several points early in the season.

Álvarez trying to rebuild relationship with Atlético fans

The relationship between Álvarez and Atlético supporters has shown signs of improvement recently.

The Argentine scored the winning goal in Atlético's 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruña and subsequently apologised to the fans for his previous comments about a possible transfer.

Álvarez admitted that the way and timing of his comments were wrong and said he understood why supporters had been angry. After his latest goal, sections of the Metropolitano crowd even gave him a standing ovation.

Barcelona and Atlético rivalry set to intensify

Barcelona and Atlético had yet to meet after the Álvarez controversy, adding another layer of tension to their upcoming La Liga clash.

While the financial value of the RFEF punishment is negligible for Barcelona, the club's decision to appeal shows that the dispute is fundamentally about the principle of whether its approach to Álvarez breached Spanish football regulations.
